Our Promise

Proudly Australian Made & Family Owned

We are proud to say that all People4Ocean products are made here in Australia, from formulas and packaging* all the way to brochures! It’s important to us, and we know how important it is to you too. We work with local manufacturers who are committed to ethical and sustainable practices, meaning our products are environmentally friendly, are of the highest quality and that we contribute to the Australian economy.

Our range is inspired by the Australian lifestyle and adapted for our harsh, sunny climate by our Aussie family. And did we mention, we’re also part French? Oui! Our co-founder Louise became a marine biologist in Australia after travelling from France in 2012 to study at James Cook University in Townsville.

* To the exception of our zinc stick paper tubes which are supplied from overseas as we currently cannot find an Australian alternative.

Reef Safe & Ocean-Friendly

Our range of sunscreens are co-formulated with marine biologists and experts in reef conservation. A lot of research has gone into engineering our products, ensuring they are as safe as possible for marine life and coral reefs (with the most recent science available) whilst being effective for people and long hours under the sun and in the water.

All of our products are compliant with the Hawaii Sunscreen Ban, but we go even further: excluding all 14 toxins known as marine contaminants according to Haereticus Environmental Laboratory.

Our sunscreens are 3 hours water-resistant, ensuring minimum amounts of product leach off into the environment and that it stays where it’s meant to be: on your skin!

Supporting Reefs Worldwide

As reef scientists, saving coral reefs is not just a passion, but at the very core of our business model too.

In the past 50 years, global warming, overfishing and pollution from land use (agriculture run offs, urbanisation) have killed over 50% of reefs worldwide, compromising marine biodiversity and millions of human livelihoods. Today, sunscreen pollution is part of the problem.

For this reason, for every product you purchase, People4Ocean donates up to $1 to reef conservation initiatives worldwide, in an effort to reverse some of the damage done. We believe our sun care solutions - and the people that use them - can be a driving force to preserve these vital ecosystems.

Our founders also continue to travel to different reef destinations worldwide, helping wherever they can or are needed to fight for the survival of these amazing underwater environments.

Carbon Conscious Packaging

We won’t do any greenwashing here… Our tubes contain some plastic. But there is a lot more to our plastic packaging than meets the eye…

Our sunscreen tubes are made of 60% sugar cane bioplastic and 40% recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Sugar cane bioplastic is a great alternative because its carbon footprint is much smaller. Sugar cane is a plant, capturing carbon whilst it is growing. When the sugar cane PE leaves the factory, it is carbon neutral.

We have partnered with Australian tube manufacturer Impact Tubes, who use solar energy and grow their own forest in New South Wales, making our tubes almost entirely carbon neutral! This means the process of making of our products does not contribute to climate change.

Having our tubes manufactured here supports Australian jobs and also significantly reduces our carbon footprint by not shipping empty tubes (containing air) around the world. According to a report published by the Guardian newspaper in the UK “just one of the world’s largest container ships can emit about as much pollution as 50 million cars.”

There is still the matter of our tubes’ afterlife…

We know all too well about the terrible impact’s plastic waste has on the environment and marine life. Our tubes are 100% kerb side recyclable in Australia. And because our products are undiluted, one tube of sunscreen will last you a very long time. When your tube is empty, remove the cap and place both tube and cap in your recycling bin.

This is why we didn’t take this decision lightly. In fact, we investigated packaging solutions for many months before choosing sugar cane HDPE tubes. In the context of climate change mitigation, our tubes are the most environmentally friendly option, and this is why:

  1. 100% Australian made: our tubes are made in Australia and not many sun care brands can say the same!
  2. Sugar Cane derived: further reducing the carbon content of our tubes
  3. Made using solar energy: minimising the use of fossil energy and reducing our carbon emissions in the process!
  4. Supporting a forest regeneration project: People4Ocean is excited to be a part of a world-first, sustainable forest project initiated by our tube manufacturer. The plantation is home to 20,000 trees in NSW to offset the carbon emissions of our packaging. This area is also home to endangered and vulnerable animal species and native vegetation that will be preserved or rehabilitated through this project

Finally, our newest edition to the range – our SPF 50+ Zinc Sticks - are encased in paper tubes, which makes them 100% biodegradable, compostable and zero-waste! The only down side is that these paper tubes are currently not manufactured in Australia and we have to source them from overseas.
