10 Facts About Plastic: The Hidden Cost of Our Plastic Economy

Plastic has become one of the most widely used materials on Earth. Lightweight, durable and inexpensive to produce, it has revolutionised industries from healthcare to food preservation. However, the convenience of plastic comes with a significant environmental cost. From its dependence on fossil fuels to its contribution to climate change and pollution, the plastic lifecycle is far more resource-intensive than many people realise.

Here are 10 facts that reveal the true impact of plastic production.

 

1. The world produces over 460 million tonnes of plastic every year

Global plastic production has increased exponentially over the past 70 years. Today, more than 460 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually—more than double the amount produced at the turn of the century. If current trends continue, global plastic production could nearly triple by 2060.

The vast majority of this plastic is designed for convenience rather than longevity. Much of it is used only once before becoming waste, placing enormous pressure on waste management systems and natural ecosystems around the world.

2. Plastic is made almost entirely from fossil fuels

Around 98% of conventional plastics are manufactured using fossil fuels such as crude oil, natural gas and coal. These raw materials are refined into petrochemicals, which are then transformed into the polymers that make up everyday plastics.

As the world gradually transitions away from fossil fuels for energy, many oil and gas companies are increasingly investing in plastic production to maintain demand for petroleum products. This means plastic has become one of the fastest-growing markets for fossil fuel consumption.

3. Plastic production consumes enormous amounts of energy

Manufacturing plastic is surprisingly energy intensive. Producing just one kilogram of plastic requires approximately 60–120 megajoules of energy, depending on the type of polymer being produced. This is roughly equivalent to the energy contained in 1.5–3 litres of petrol.

Energy is required at every stage of production—from extracting crude oil and natural gas, transporting raw materials, refining them into petrochemicals, manufacturing plastic pellets, and finally producing finished goods. The result is a supply chain with a substantial carbon footprint before a plastic product is even used.

4. Plastic is a significant contributor to climate change

Plastic is often thought of as a pollution problem, but it is also a climate issue. Across its entire lifecycle—including fossil fuel extraction, refining, manufacturing, transportation and disposal—plastic contributes an estimated 3–4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

As plastic production continues to grow, these emissions are expected to increase unless the industry shifts towards renewable energy, circular material systems and reduced reliance on virgin fossil-based plastics.

5. Most plastic is never recycled

Despite decades of recycling campaigns, the reality is that only around 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled. Approximately 19% is incinerated, while the remaining 72% ends up in landfills, is openly burned, or leaks into the natural environment.

Many plastics are difficult or uneconomical to recycle because they contain multiple polymer types, dyes, adhesives or food contamination. As a result, recycling alone cannot solve the plastic crisis without also reducing production and consumption.

6. Single-use packaging creates the largest volume of plastic waste

Packaging accounts for approximately 40% of global plastic production, making it the single largest use of plastic worldwide. Yet most packaging is designed for only a few minutes of use before being discarded.

Items such as food wrappers, shopping bags, takeaway containers and beverage bottles often have useful lives measured in minutes but persist in the environment for hundreds of years. This imbalance between lifespan and environmental persistence is one of the defining challenges of modern plastic consumption.

7. Millions of tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year

Every year, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic leak into rivers, lakes and oceans. Much of this waste originates on land, where inadequate waste collection, littering and stormwater runoff transport plastics into waterways.

Once in the marine environment, plastics are carried by currents across the globe. They accumulate on beaches, coral reefs, mangroves and the open ocean, threatening marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on healthy oceans for food, livelihoods and coastal protection.

8. Plastic doesn't disappear—it breaks into smaller pieces

Unlike organic materials, most plastics do not biodegrade. Instead, sunlight, waves and weather gradually break larger items into microplastics (smaller than five millimetres) and even nanoplastics, which are invisible to the naked eye.

These microscopic particles have now been detected in drinking water, seafood, table salt, the air we breathe, and even human blood, lungs and placental tissue. Scientists are still working to understand the long-term implications for human health, but the widespread presence of microplastics demonstrates just how pervasive plastic pollution has become.

9. Wildlife across the planet is affected by plastic pollution

More than 900 marine species are known to be impacted by plastic pollution. Animals can become entangled in discarded fishing gear, ropes and packaging, while many mistake floating plastics for food.

Sea turtles often confuse plastic bags with jellyfish, seabirds feed plastic fragments to their chicks, and whales have been found with tens of kilograms of plastic in their stomachs. Beyond these visible impacts, microplastics can also transport toxic chemicals through marine food webs, affecting organisms from plankton to top predators.

10. Plastic has changed the planet in less than a century

Plastic has existed for little more than 100 years, yet in that brief period it has become one of the most widespread human-made materials ever created. Since large-scale production began in the 1950s, humanity has produced more than 9 billion tonnes of plastic, enough to permanently alter landscapes, rivers, coastlines, and oceans across the globe.

Unlike many materials developed throughout human history, plastic is designed to last but is often used for only minutes before being discarded. Today, plastic pollution has been found from the deepest point in the ocean—the Mariana Trench—to the summit of Mount Everest, in Arctic sea ice, Antarctic snow, remote tropical islands, and throughout the human body. Few inventions have left such a rapid, pervasive, and long-lasting environmental footprint. Plastic has become a defining marker of the Anthropocene, the geological age in which human activity has become the dominant influence on Earth's ecosystems.
